About Mandarin Kids

Our Story

China: the language, the people and the place has been a passion of mine for around 10 years. In October 2014 I made the jump and went to Hong Kong to work as a Kindergarten teacher for a year. I then followed some friends and moved to Shanghai the following year, this had been my hope all along, to get to see the mainland. Whilst in Shanghai I taught a type of "circle time" to parents and babies in English. The style of teaching and the quality of teaching taught me a lot and it is quite different to anything I have seen in England.

In 2016 in Shanghai I met my lovely husband, Gari (Yue Kai). He is from Hong Kong, in the photo you can see our son too.

Gari's mother tongue is Cantonese, the dialect of Southern China and Hong Kong. I can speak Mandarin which is the standardised dialect of Mainland China, all education is given in Mandarin in China which is one of the reasons that it is spoken by so many people. According to Babbel it is spoken by 1/6 of the people in the world.
